In the east, they look at it in another way, focusing on the fitness of not only the body but also the mind. Chi Gong (also known as Qigong) is one such practice that is making its way from the east to the west.

Originating in China, Chi Gong stems from a mixture of Chinese theories in philosophy, martial arts and medicine. It focuses on the manipulation of Chi (vital energy) by alignment of the breath, specialized movements and the heightening of awareness for the betterment of the mind, body and spirit. The four basic elements of this practice are the dynamic, static, meditative and external. They focus, respectively, on pre-determined movement patters, maintaining specific postures, visualization and philosophical awareness in breath and chi circulation and outside influences such as massage, herbal treatments and social interaction.

Using this form of exercise has the effect of improving both bodily and mental health. One will experience increased energy, better circulation and a more efficient metabolism from the physical exercise. The mental training will produce a calmness of mind, better sleeping patterns and consequently one will have a better outlook on the world around them. The awareness of body that is gained will help with balance and increase control over the body’s movements.

There are many accounts of people using this practice to achieve miraculous things, such as curing their cancer. While these claims may or may not be true, what is true is that people who practice Chi Gong are generally healthier and happier. By looking at a typical Chi Gong review one can see that the majority of people are satisfied by the results they get from the exercise and the meditation.

Having something calming and meditative may be a great addition to a typical western workout and a nice break from the gym. Chi Gong is easy to do at home or in any quiet setting, like the local park. Being that it is a low-impact exercise routine, it can be the perfect choice for the elderly or those suffering physical disabilities as well.
